Thankfully, Remnant: From The Ashesplayers are able to respec their traits later on in the game, meaning that it’s impossible to make any permanent mistakes. Generally speaking, however, there are some traits that work well for every possible playstyle and build due to their ability to provide unparralled defensive and offensive support in just about any situation.
Updated January 13, 2022, by Tom Bowen: Remnant: From the Ashes has received a number of different DLC packs and updates since releasing in 2019, many of which have had a huge impact on the game’s meta. Interestingly though, the best traits in Remnant: From the Ashes have largely remained unchanged, with Vigor still being king when it comes to general survival. With Epic Games having recently given the game away and a Switch version rumored too, there are still plenty of players who are just now starting their adventure through Remnant: From the Ashes. With this in mind, the following guide has been updated to include additional information, more pictures, as well as details on how to unlock each trait.
12 Trigger Happy
Trigger Happy increases the speed at which all ranged weapons fire, which can be incredibly useful for those who favor fast-firing and high ammo capacity weapons like the Beam Rifle. It can also be useful with certain other weapons as well, but it does have one or two major drawbacks.
As well as using up ammo a lot more quickly, Trigger Happy can also increase the frequency with which players need to reload. It’s therefore best paired with the Quick Hands trait, though is arguably the weaker of the two traits due to it only benefiting certain weapons. To be clear, it’s still a very useful trait, but most players will be better off prioritizing Quick Hands.
11 Shadow Walker
Though Remnant: From the Ashes doesn’t provide too many opportunities for stealth-based gameplay, that’s not to say that the Shadow Walker trait doesn’t still come in handy from time to time. It reduces the range at which enemies will aggro to the player, allowing them to slip past unnoticed when used correctly.
Given the scarcity of ammo and how dangerous certain enemies can be, being able to sneak past them and avoid unnecessary conflict can be a real blessing. It also allows for some great stealth kills, particularly when paired with the Heartseeker ring, which provides a 100% crit chance when attacking passive enemies and increases crit damage by 20%.
10 Guardian’s Blessing
Guardian’s Blessing provides the character with an increased defense against melee attacks. While it’s not advised to use melee in this game, there are a number of enemies who will quickly run players down making it difficult to fight them off with weapons. In these instances, defense against melee attacks can be pretty useful.

Having that added defense against melee types can save the player’s bacon when they get mobbed by melee types or if they’re going up against a melee boss. It’s not the most powerful trait in the game by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have it.
9 Bark Skin
Having a high level of armor can prevent the worst attacks from breaking through and draining one’s life pool. Increasing it to ridiculous levels can entirely negate some lower-level attacks though. Whether players are running an armored tank or not, it pays to have a few extra layers of defense against the enemy.
Bark Skin gives the player more armor with each level, negating more and more attacks. Armor may not be as critical as health, but it certainly helps preserve what little health players do have and it’s a great feeling watching one’s character shrug off weaker attacks with barely a scratch.
8 Mind’s Eye
Given how weak melee builds are in Remnant: From the Ashes, there’s a good chance that most players’ builds are going to involve guns in some capacity. Mind’s Eye is a trait that increases the damage that players deal at any range.
Whether up close with a shotgun or at a distance with a sniper rifle, this trait will boost the damage output by a noticeable amount. This is a great trait for increasing DPS and benefits any and all ranged weapons, making it a solid choice for just about any build.
7 Kingslayer
Many of the most powerful builds in the game rely on dealing critical hit damage. There’s a good reason for this, as getting that added boost from a critical hit can save a ton of ammo and bring down bosses very quickly. Kingslayer increases the amount of damage that’s dealt when players do trigger a critical hit.
Even if players aren’t trying to raise their critical hit chance, having that extra boost of damage every now and again can be a great surprise and will likely save players’ lives on multiple occasions throughout a typical run. It’s therefore a useful trait to have hidden away up one’s sleeve.
6 Executioner
While on the subject of critical hit builds, the Executioner trait is an absolute necessity for those hoping to make them work. Executioner raises the chances of players striking a critical hit by a total of 25% at level 20, which can be a real game-changer when up against some of the game’s harder content.
That 25% is huge when players are trying to nudge their critical hit chance up to 100% and picking this trait can provide some flexibility when it comes to gear loadouts too. Even for non-critical hit builds, a few points in this trait can still offer some much-needed bonus damage every now and then.
5 Glutton
Consumables play a big role in survival, especially in the late game. As players step into the final parts of this nightmarish world, they’ll find themselves chugging Bloodwort like crazy in the tougher fights. The Glutton trait enables players to consume those items faster, which is great for fast-paced engagements like bosses.
Each point increases the effect by 1.75%. At max level, players can therefore slug down consumables so fast that it actually becomes a little comical. While the value in maxing out this trait is debatable, most players will definitely need to invest a few points into it for endgame boss fights.
4 Mother’s Blessing
For as many melees enemies as there are in the game, there are far more ranged enemies. This makes Mother’s Blessing absolutely essential for long-term survival. It has the effect of reducing the damage that players receive from attacks coming from range.
It’s a great defensive trait, as players are effectively negating a portion of all types of ranged damage. This gives them some survivability against everything from the little guys to the largest bosses. Regardless of a player’s build, they should be sure to invest a few points into this trait.
3 Quick Hands
Having the ability to get more bullets into one’s weapon sooner is key to achieving high levels of DPS. Quick Hands is a trait that increases players’ reload speed with any kind of weapon that takes ammo.
At high enough levels, sniper rifles can be reloaded like an assault rifle and assault rifles will feel like it’s on a belt feed. It’s also handy for weapons like the Devastator that need to be reloaded after every shot. The only downside to this trait is that it can burn through ammo very quickly.
2 Exploiter
All enemies in the game, including bosses, have a weak spot that when struck with any weapon will deal increased damage. Players that can learn the weak spots of tougher enemies will be able to drop them sooner and better conserve their precious ammo.
This makes Exploiter a valuable trait as it increases the amount of damage that players deal when connecting with an enemy’s weak spot. Maxing out this skill will increase the damage dealt to weak spots by 20%. Whether players are going for a one-hit kill build or something else, having this bonus to damage should help an awful lot.
1 Vigor
Vigor is the best trait in Remnant: From the Ashes. Whether they’re a lowly beginner or a seasoned veteran, players should be investing at least a few points into this trait, if not maxing it out. In fact, unless players are going for a very specific build and know exactly what they’re doing, the first 20 trait points are probably best spent here.
This is because each point in Vigor increases total health by 2.5. Maxed out, this means that players have an extra 50 points of health to play around with. Having that extra safety net can mean the difference between surviving a brutal boss attack or waking up at an earlier checkpoint. Players who ignore this trait do so at their own peril.
