10 Mr. Mime
Now, you can chalk up Mr. Mime as being the far and away winner for weirdest and most unnerving psychic-type pokémon, but it’s also pretty mysterious in his own right. Not only is it a bipedal creature, but it eerily resembles a human in clown makeup. This automatically makes it an odd design for a game about collecting and battling with creatures. Let’s not even get into the fact that Ash Ketchum’s mother has one working as her own personal butler/maid which makes everyone question pokémon labor laws.
9 Malamar
Malamar is an enigma simply for the fact that you had to turn your Nintendo DS upside down to evolve Inkay into Malamar. The ocean generally tends to freak people out due to its vastness and the fact that humans know more about space than our ocean. Malamar’s difficult to look at in part due to its fierce gaze it seems to have at all times, as well as the facts that it kind of looks like its body is inside out. Do trainers have to forcefully hold their Inkay upside down against their will to evolve them?

8 Gardevoir
Mystery can come from dark and brooding, but it can also come from a quiet and unapproachable elegance. The thing about Gardevoir is that you can easily see it being owned by royalty or families of wealth, but you can also see it as that creature that took up residence in an abandoned manor. As much as its design communicates elegance and feminine energy, it also is very spiritual in the way it moves. It’s mega-form also looks like it’s wearing a wedding dress which only opens the box in terms of mystery.
7 Claydol
Most pokémon are designed to either be cute or cool looking. The creators want them to appeal to large groups of people, so it would make sense to make them adorable or fierce-looking. Claydol, however, falls into the category of pokémon who are tough to look at. Most people won’t quite understand what it’s based on or supposed to be. It looks quite alien and could easily be confused as an ancient antique of sorts. Take 5 minutes and try to figure out which part of Claydol is its face.
6 Espeon
Every evolution of Eevee has does two things exceptionally well. They always manage to be adorable and at the same time their design is true to the pokémon-type it’s trying to convey. Espeon is the psychic-type evolution for Eevee and along with it being super cute, it could also pass as an alien. Its split tail, violet coloring, and a gem in the middle of its forehead help bring forth the psychic energy it needs to have. Despite looking feminine, trainers only have a 12.5% chance of running into a female one.

5 Hypno
When your entries in the PokéDex describe tales of you possibly kidnapping children there’s no doubt you belong on any list involving psychic-type pokémon. Hypno is strange because it evolves from Drowzee who seems like it’s defining characteristic is that it’s always tired. Hypno, on the other hand, looks prepared and well-rested as it tries to accomplish its goal of making others fall asleep so it can hypnotize them. It goes from being docile and inactive to possibly being the biggest creep in all of Kanto.
4 Lunala
Imagine being described as the emissary of the moon. Lunala has the privilege of receiving that distinct honor and is considered the best that calls the moon. It gathers in all of the light it can and uses it as energy in different ways. Lunala’s most interesting ability is that when it uses its signature move called Moongeist Beam it transforms and takes on a whole new form. Just like the moon it has various states and is a bundle of mystery. It’s part psychic, part ghost, but 100% interesting.
3 Mewtwo
If it wasn’t for the first Pokémon movie and the information provided in Pokémon Red & Blue, then Mewtwo would be a lot more mysterious. It has always had a natural mysterious nature simply because it’s a failed clone of one of Kanto’s legendary tales of a pokémon. Most of Mewtwo’s backstory has been explained and audiences have even been fortunate enough to learn about its motives. It’s still one of the coolest pokémon in existence, it just doesn’t happen to be as mysterious as other psychic-types.

2 Unown
Unown is a pokémon that makes up the entire alphabet in terms of form variety. They’re introduced as being native to the Johto region, but is that the case with these weird letter-based creatures? There are many theories about Unown and why exactly they are the way they are. One of the more mysterious theories is that they were all once a different Pokemon, but aliens manipulated their genetic code as a way to talk to humans on Earth without directly revealing themselves to the Pokémon world of humans.
1 Mew
If you grew up playing Pokémon Red & Blue then you likely remember the rumor that went around elementary schools about Mew. There was a belief that if you pulled off a certain sequence of events in the game that Mew would be hidden under a specific truck and you could trigger an encounter. This was fake as kids quickly learned that special events were the only place you could get the mysterious psychic cat Pokémon. Little is still known about Mew, it’s famous clone Mewtwo, and it’s theorized clone Ditto.
