Jerry Don Elders, 39, shot the officer three times after the officer pulled over a vehicle in the 1100 block of Hillside Drive in Burleson at around 4:15 a.m., Burleson Police Chief Billy Cordell said at a news conference.
The officer, later identified as Joshua Lott, was hospitalized in a stable condition, Cordell said.
“He’s alert, he’s in a stable condition,” Cordell added. “We’re just very thankful. It could’ve been a very different outcome.”
Elders and two other occupants of that vehicle are also suspected in a carjacking that took place later on Wednesday morning, according to police, where a female driver was shot dead.
Police believe the suspects abandoned a vehicle that Lott pulled over in the 700 block of John Jones Drive.
A suspect then traveled to a home in the 8000 block of County Road 802 and carjacked a resident, police said. The woman arrived at the Joshua Police Department with gunshot wounds and was transported to a Fort Worth hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Cordell said Elders was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Gainesville, Texas, after a police pursuit.
Police continued the search for a second person who fled the stolen vehicle, Cordell said. “We don’t know for sure who that is,” he said.
But he added that police are “extremely relieved” to Elders in custody.
He is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison. Cordell said his bond would be set at $1 million.
Elders was also wanted on felony drug offense warrants when the shooting took place, Cordell added.
The police department later paid tribute to Lott, a four-year veteran of the department, and the female carjacking victim on its Facebook page.
“Officer Lott was fortunate today when there have been other officers that were not,” the department said.
“Our prayers are with Officer Lott and his family, the innocent victim’s family whose life was taken when it is believed the suspect carjacked her vehicle, and to all law enforcement officers across the country and their families.”
